'Own It North' - New Free Legal Advice Service for Small Businesses
Northern Edge is working with theUniversity of the Arts London and Skillset to run 'Own It North', a pilot legal advice service for small businesses in the North.
Are you a busines working in the creative or digital industries and based in the North?
Do you have an issue or question about intellectual property rights?
Then you can download free contracts, advice sheets etc from the Own It website
Do you have a turnover of £100,000 or less per year?
Then you're eligible to receive free advice via a seminar event or a free 45 minute one-to-one advice session with a top local law firm. Advice clinics and eminar events will take place this May and June.

Flying Start - Arts and Social Enterprise
This successful programme attracted over 140 applicants and a cohort of 40 enjoyed an intensive residential event earlier this month, coaching them in developing their arts based ideas for social enterprise.

MELD - development opportunity for journalists and interactive designers
What is MELD? A convergence of platforms requires a convergence of skills.
Journalists know how to find a story and to tell it well. Interaction designers know how to get that story out to the right audience. MELD will bring the best of both worlds together to find out what happens when the two worlds collide.Selected journalists will be paid to join selected new media practitioners at a five-day residential lab. There they will l earn the necessary skills for success in the connected world

This one-day introduction to the Steadicam is designed to show you how Steadicam works and how it can best be used in your productions. For those attendees interested in Steadicam as a career, this will help you decide if it is the right move for you. We will look at and discuss high-end Steadicam shots, how and when to best utilise this remarkable camera stabilising device, give you a bit of historical perspective, discuss the business and financial aspects of Steadicam, and, most importantly, each attendee will strap on the Steadicam and be put through some composition exercises

Intro to Avid Xpress
This class is intended for beginners and for people who have been using Avid or other systems on their own but want the facts laid out in a clear and focused way.
This introduction to Avid Xpress will teach you the basics of Avid, from recording your material onto the computer, to organising it, editing it, adding titles and effects, and outputting it back to a tape you can play anywhere. This class will focus on the specifics of working with Avid Xpress, but also on basics of editing which can be applied to any editing system, including all other Avid products

Free training in Solidworks for Designer-makers
This course provides training in Solidworks, a flexible 3D modelling programme that allows for the rapid creation of realistic and accurate models that can be used to aid manufacture and create stunning visualisations.
3D MODELLING for DESIGNERS
COURSE ONE (17-18 DEC), COURSE TWO (20-21 DEC)
This course is aimed at designer/makers who wish to grasp a working knowledge of Solidworks to create photorealistic visualisations and create accurate prototypes to aid manufacture. Participants will be guided through the fundamentals of sketching, building a model through parts and assemblies, repairing errors, creating drawings and applying materials to a model.
Demonstrations will also be given of Photoworks, a rendering programme, that allows the user to create realistic visualisations of their model. Although no previous CAD experience is necessary, students must possess a knowledge of basic windows functions.

3D modelling courses are FREE, but places are limited, so book early to avoid disappointment. Courses will run from 10:00am-4:30pm each day and lunch will be provided.
Funding may be available to assist with travel expenses.

Centrifuge - project for contemporary visual arts
Twenty successful young artists and curators from across the North have made a successful visit the Documenta 07 festival in Kassel. They are now taking part in a collaborative project culminating in March 2008. You can see them and their work here

a unique professional development opportunity for heritage professionals from across the north of England

What? An exciting and active learning process exploring new approaches to work-based problem-solving and learning. Each participant will be encouraged to explore an issue or obstacle related to their work/ organisation, including receiving feedback from an expert panel.
When and where? 12/13 and 26/27 February 2008. Overnight accommodation will be provided if required.) Details of location – tbc
For whom? 20 cultural and heritage professionals from organisations across the north of England (NW, NE and Yorkshire and Humber). Ideally, these people will be at a level to effect organisational change (curator, director, board member/ trustee, experienced freelancer). The programme allows for up to two people per organisation.
Why? The project is seeking to develop of professional training, research and knowledge transfer in the creative and cultural industries. It is a Northern Edge project, funded by Northern Way, and developed by the University of Hull.

The Northern Edge Music Business Master Class is a one-off, tailoured and small scale business development day presented by leading trade organisation AIM.

The Music Business Master Class is a free event from Northern Edge, delivered by the Association of Independent Music (AIM), the trade association representing independent record labels in the
Sessions covered include:
'The Art of Music Marketing', and will be led by music marketing specialist Mike McNally of McNally Consulting (ex-EMI, NME and Virgin Radio). Attendees will get the chance to watch case study presentations on successful marketing campaigns from a number of industry professionals.
'Digital Music' led by Laura Seach, Head of Digital at independent label Ninja Tune, who has handled digital sales and marketing campaigns for releases including Coldcut, Roots Manuva and Pop Levi. Laura heads the label's digital department running all aspects of Ninja's online and mobile campaigns and developing the company's long-term digital strategies. The session will provide attendees with an overview of current and future opportunities for generating revenue from digital music, both online and mobile, as well as a number of case study examples of digital marketing campaigns.
'New Business Models and the Future', led by Andrew Dubber, author of New Music Strategies and The Wireless blog. Looking at the increasing trend for DIY labels, 360 degree business models and the increasingly significant business areas of synchronisation licensing and brand tie-ins, attendees will be encouraged to evaluate new models and industry developments and plan for the future of their business.
The day also features a networking lunch, allowing participants to network with speakers and make new contacts.
To be eligible for one of the 15 participant places at the Northern Edge Music Business Master Class, potential applicants must meet the following criteria:
