The music industry worldwide in 2006 was worth 30 billion pounds. The UK is Europe’s largest music market, and the world’s third largest, making up for 10.4% of world record sales in 2005. The British music industry is a large and complex business with a high profile amongst the arts.

Over the last five years the industry has experienced great changes. The advent of the digital download market has meant re-thinking business models and finding new sources of profit. Such developments also needed to grow the legitimate music industry rather than feeding piracy.

As record labels struggle to adjust to the demands of consumers, so the opportunities for music makers to reach audiences directly have exploded, raising the question of who needs the middle-man now anyway?

Combine this with the ever expanding live performance and festival scene and things are looking promising for live performers and musicians who can learn how to capitalise on new technology and learn to promote themselves effectively. This will be the focus for Northern Edge music and performance projects.
